White Niggers Of America, by Pierre Vallières, translated by Joan Pinkham, McClelland & Stewart, $7.50. An autobiography in personal and political terms by one of the leaders of the FLQ. It was written while its author was in prison, and of course his legal situation is again in doubt. Whatever its qualities as a literary work or political manifesto, its significance as a symbol of the disaffected in French Canada is enormous. □
Return Of The Sphinx,
by Hugh MacLennan, Macmillan Laurentian Library, $1.95 paper. When this novel about contemporary Quebec was first published in 1967 it received mixed reviews, but even then the book was timely because it showed how an English - Canadian writer with historical intelligence and goodwill responded to the growing crisis in French Canada. Its documentary significance is even greater today. □
