Out of the more than 2,000 mutual funds in Canada, the 67 funds listed alphabetically below were judged the best in their respective categories over the past three years, based on ratings prepared for Maclean’s by BellCharts Inc., a fund research firm. To make the grade, funds needed to offer consistent, above-average returns given the degree of risk they took. Specifically, the selection process took

into account how much better it was to invest in a particular fund versus a risk-free investment such as a treasury bill. It downplayed time periods when returns were unusual, focusing on how well the fund normally performed. And it compared the fund with a benchmark to see how much better it did, how much risk was entailed in getting those additional returns and how predictable its performance was.
