Ron MacLean finishes John Intini’s sentences

For many fans, hockey wasn’t fully back until Ron MacLean stepped behind the desk to play Don Cherry’s mild-mannered foil on CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada earlier this month. During the lockouts—first the NHL and then the CBC—the Oakville, Ont., resident kept busy by playing in three “beer leagues” (he broke his nose during a game last fall). MacLean, 45, recently finished Maclean’s Associate Editor John Intini’s sentences.

THE FUNNIEST THING I’VE SEEN AT A LOCAL RINK ... was in Bentley, Alta., when a mom’s dentures fell out on the ice while she was yelling at a referee.

I was the ref. She had come out to give me hell after her son was hurt but ended up pretty mortified about the teeth.

A PLAYOFF BEARD... is something I’ve never had. I can’t keep my hands off my face when I have any growth.

1. During the hockey lockout, he travelled to about 35 local rinks in Canada to host CBC’s Movie Night in Canada.

2. Never leaves home without music-Kathleen Edwards, Matt Mays and Jim Bryson are some recent favourites.

3. He’s a seventime Gemini Award winner.

I DO MY BÉST THINKING... on water. I’ve always liked being in motion. I used to race boats competitively.

THE MANLIEST THING I’VE EVER DONE IS ... a tough one. I’d have to say weightlifting since I’m not a handy guy. I’LL NEVER THROW AWAY.. . all of my hockey books, which, unfortunately, make up most of my library. One of the reasons I wanted to avoid doing sports for a living was because I knew I’d become a social illiterate.
