From lawn mower-driving dork to prime-time Dr. McDreamy

It took nearly 20 years, but Patrick Dempsey has finally found a role just as memorable as his breakout. Forget being recognized as Can’t Buy Me Love’s lawn mower-riding dork-he now answers to the more flattering Dr. McDreamy, his character’s nickname in Grey’s Anatomy, one of last season’s hit shows. Not unlike many of his ’80s peers, Dempsey fell off the radar for most of the past two decades. “I don’t want to ever audition again,” he says. “I did five years of auditioning and never getting anything.” But thanks to a few recent

supporting roles (Sweet Home Alabama), TV guest-starring stints ( Will & Grace), and his swoon-inducing Grey’s Anatomy turn, Dempsey is back on top.

Plus, if it all disappears again, he’s got contingency plans. There’s the apple farm he, his wife and their three-yearold daughter have in Maine. And he’s a part-time race-car driver with the Hyper Sport team. “To them, I’m just the guy from Hollywood learning how to drive the car. They pick on me and keep my ego in check.” Turns out, not everyone finds him dreamy. SHANDA DEZIEL
