Terminator-style weapons are now a reality. Boeing is testing a laser-gunship system that can be mounted on a plane, helicopter or even a truck. A high-energy “tactical laser” with sophisticated beam control would enable a gunship to issue a 10-cm beam strong enough to cut through metal at a distance of up to 13 km. The system’s narrow field of destruction would make it useful for taking out targets in urban areas with no collateral damage.
