THE FOUR STRAGGLERS

IF YOU read this, you can start the story now.—Four men meet in a shell-hole in France, near the end of the war— the Four Stragglers. The reader identifies three of them in the first instalment as Captain Newcombe, Paul Cremarre and Runnells.

Is Canada An Immigration Sieve?

MR. SAMUEL JOHNSON once said that the finest view in Scotland was the high road into England, and to-day it seems as if the roads and railways southward across the international boundary are the most attractive objects that many Canadian eyes can see.

NEVILLES drove straight back to Shag Villa. Just outside the city he met James Turnbull in his Super Six. Myra Huntingdon was beside him. Turnbull grudgingly touched his hat, but Myra took no notice, simply staring stonily before her. “Snubbed.”
THE GILDED NUTMEG 2223

THE GILDED NUTMEG

IT WAS a bright April day. The air was full of the tang of Spring. Birds sang; in the distance a hand-organ rasped cheerfully: and Mr. Bowermeek’s feet rang with joyous tread on the sidewalk. The little gentleman could appreciate spring weather.

THE KING’S BRAHM

THERE is a certain type of man, common to both hemispheres, and possibly to all races, though he is more sharply outlined when he is English or American, who thrives on disaster. You meet him to-day, seedy and unshaven, and slip him the trifling loan he asks; you turn aside to-morrow to avoid him, but beware how you cross the street the next day, lest his lacquered limousine strike you into an unconsciousness, from whence even the fragrance of his considerable cigar shall not recall you.

CANADA ABLE TO RETURN NOW TO GOLD STANDARD

CANADA is not at present on a gold basis. Although the Government does not admit that its demand notes are not redeemable in gold, and probably does actually redeem such as are presented for redemption, it effectually destroys all incentive to the holder of such notes to demand their redemption by depriving him of two of the most elementary property rights in the gold which he obtains in exchange for them—the right to send it wherever he wishes, and the right to change its form if he so desires.
