In the Editors’ Confidence

IN THESE precincts arguments come, go and are half-forgotten as regularly as the deadlines. But one brouhaha that never fades is the running debate over covers, which issue-in and issue-out keeps our editorial ego in a state of frantic fluctuation.

Now, in a spirit of humble enquiry, we invite further comment. We reproduce here the 24 covers that appeared in our 24 issues during 1948. We ask you to tear out this page, mark a figure one over the cover you liked best, a 2 on your second choice, a 3 on your third and so on up to 5. If you’d like to enclose a letter about our covers in general or any cover or covers in particular we offer you a fighting chance to get your postage back. We’ll pay $25 for the best letter—pro, con or neutral—and $10 each for the three next best.
