HOME FROM THE SEAS

This floor stays steady as a church, The table does not slide or lurch; These window hangings do not twitch,

The pens and pencils do not pitch across the blotter, back and forth—

Now sou'-by-east, then west-bynorth;

The chairs and pictures look composed,

And just this second, while I dozed, No slatting ropes played monotones of syncopated wooden groans Against the masts.

This room ¡s still;

Nothing moves, look where I will;

A voyage proves sweet home to be Of an immense stability.
