MONEY

Tiger’s new lair

Golf champion Tiger Woods has given himself a 30th birthday present: a US$40 million oceanfront estate on Jupiter Island, Fla. The jaw-dropping price, for a 13-year-old house on four hectares, set a record for the neighbourhood, which has been described by a magazine as America’s richest zip code. The purchase bested a US$13 million price for a nearby home paid by Céline Dion last year.

iPod excess

Vacuum-tube amplifiers are prized by audiophiles for their warm sound. Now they’re available for iPods, correcting the distortion caused by compressed MP3 music files used by the iPod. Although

the sound from the amplifier/loud-

speaker combo may be divine, the $4,600 price dwarfs that of a $250 iPod Nano.
