The ever-vigilant word police at Slate.com have no fear of offending readers, but they draw the line at improper usage, as became clear in a recent correction: “In a Jan. 12 ‘Culturebox,’ Seth Mnookin incorrectly referred to [disgraced American author] James Frey's motivational tattoo (FTBSITTTD, for ‘F— the bullshit, it’s time to throw down’) as an acronym. Those letters do not form a word, so it is an abbreviation, not an acronym.”
